  • A serious answer: there are some far-right groups who are extremely anti-government and would like to see it overthrown regardless of their current political leanings, for a multitude of different reasons; some assume they will seize power for themselves, some hold perceived grievances against the state and feel it must be destroyed in retribution, and some wish to usher in some kind of libertarian utopia.

From my understanding they aren’t really that large in number, but the concern is that high tech weaponry could mean the size of their ranks is less of a limiting factor as to how much damage they can cause.

Imagine they bomb electrical substations, or take out every fuel tank at a natural gas depot at once, or fly a shape charge into a politicians head at 200km/hr like in that one Black Mirror-like short video someone did.

  • Also users behind large NAT gateways (colleges/dorms, apartment complexes with ISP contracts) or CGNAT (most mobile users including 5G hotspots which could be a primary internet connection for a household) will often appear to be behind one or a handful of IPs, and not only does blocking one block them all, but blocking a gateway IP that is part of a pool might not necessarily block the intended user at all. Also as was stated, it’s trivial to get a new IP either via VPN or, sometimes, resetting your modem.

IP bans are often not effective.
