No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is "dark humor" generally acceptable or is it just my parents/culture more sensitive towards jokes?
2·10 hours agoIn the end, are you any less frugal than your parents?
I mean they make so much money with their investments that its kinda silly to be so cheapskate on these things.
Literally had like text messages that she wants to present in a civil lawsuit and the phone was so laggy and it looks like it’s about to fail at any time… and still refused to buy a new phone afterwards (so you wont have a random malfunction and lose your evidence when you need it the most)
Literally refused to buy a dash cam until I keep insisting… like literally for their own good, “what if something happens?” I asked them, then they get mad for suggesting the idea that a car accident… something that happens all the time… could happen and they need a dash cam for evidence… I mean they literally got lightly rear-ended before… and it totaled the car… they didn’t have a dash cam back then, but luckily insurance automatically sided against the other side because its a rear-end collision.
Literally so frugal that they don’t wanna spend money on CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS… like we didn’t have that for like nearly a decade of living in the house… (eventually got them)
It’s not that they can’t afford it. Its they feel like everything is a waste.
Also the entire basement is filled with random stuff… like other people’s abandoned items… and we never even use it… hoarding so much shit lol…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever traveled solo? How was your experience?
2·22 hours agothey said that since we’re stuck in Switzerland and I seem quite bored, and since I’m a legal adult now, why don’t I go on a trip abroad alone?
Personally, I never traveled abroad alone…
The only “travelling” I’ve done without parents was on school trips… (I remember going to Washington, DC once.)
I think its benefits doesn’t outweight the costs for me.
If I was still in China, maybe I would have more of an incentive… I mean its hard to get information from within the country due to censorship, so I’d probably be more willing to take risks and go abroad… I would probabaly have more willpower to just “tough it out”.
But I already won the “lottery” (metaphorically, China isn’t actually eligible for an actual lottery since there are already too many people trying to leave) of being able to get out as a family… so eh…
The thing is… I felt safe(ish) when I was a kid under my parent’s protection. Every burden of documents and planning is on parents, you get to be stress free and be ignorant to everything…
Idk if I could manage everything solo like visas, going to various appointments for documents… getting place tickets… waiting in an airport, making sure my stuff isn’t being stolen… booking hotels…
and the most important thing… making sure yoi have enough funds…
just thinking about it feels stressful.
Internet here is uncensored afiak so I feel like I have even less of an incentive to do traveling right now…
The US is kinda big… I still haven’t even explored my adoptive country yet… only been to NYC and Philly…
there are still so many places I could go domestically and its less stressful (aside from ICE… but if I go abroad re-entry to the US isn’t exactly gonne be fun either)
I’ve always wanted to go to Canada as a family (minus the toxic brother… haven’t gotten along with him for many years now)… Like it just feels less terrifying to be with family. Never gotten around to doing it… always putting it off and procrastinating (parents had the funds but I think they were busy)… then Covid hit and then the thought of travel sort of went out the window for a while…
Then I got depression…
And then we got a “new sheriff in town”
So now I don’t wanna be crossing borders for 3 more years… 👀
TLDR: Emigrated with family, never really travelled solo, lacking the motivivations + anxiety/depression make it hard to do it solo.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the point of specifically Americans identifying with other cultures if people born there will just make fun of them for it?
11·2 days agoI call myself “Chinese American” because I was born in China and I can speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and can read basic Chinese.
Especially online because otherwise people just be white defaultist and assume you’re white. And I wanna be unique (while sharing the common national identity as an American).
I feel better about myself being unique.
Its also about self-esteem… I mean I get “jokes” thown at me all the time for being Asian looking… might as well just lean into it… embrace it…

1·2 days agoYes…
Unfortunately I’ve been just been binge watching a bunch of random stuff and been procrastinating on it…
Don’t worry… I’ll get that done some day…
5 decades later…
“Eh, I’ll work on it tomorrow…”
(My most recent binge-watch is Frieren… lots of flashbacks… just like I go through a lot of “flashbacks” everyday lol… it’s so poetic, so rhymey)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What age do you stop trusting the government?
10·2 days agoSometime between the age of 8 and 12 I remember I started to question authority, not government of countries specifically, but just the concept of authority.
I always felt like teachers were against me for some reason… frequently I got marked for “bad behavior” and weren’t allowed to go on trips…
Then I learned about Tiananmen… for context my family were all born in China… my older brother who actually went through like 7th grade in China was so shocked learned about it in the US and I remember him telling me to look it up online…
Then I remember my mom started telling me about the One Child Policy and how I was the one born against policy…
So yeah… you can see how I’m starting to get very skeptical of things
Then I learn about all the bribery stuff in US Congress, SuperPACs… etc…
US Cops shooting people and getting away with it…
The infamous Gun Trace Task Force of Baltimore
The Great Firewall of China and the censorship…
Then my “arc” completed when I was 17 and got arrested on false accusations of “agravated assault” when I was acting in self-defence against a racist bully in school… even the school admin sided against me and tried to expell me…
So by age 18, I distrust governments… and authorities in general…
Especially the PRC Government and the US Government
I mean distrusting authorities is a very American thing to do…
(Distrust PRC significantly more intensely because of the fact that they tried to end my existence)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you still remember the layout of all the houses/apartments you've lived in? Are there any other places where you still have a "map" of in your head?
10·2 days agoFreaked out part of my family when I drew a map of the first house I remember.
My mom brought me to her workplaces at least once… or maybe more times than that… (I don’t even remember how many times tbh) and then one day my older brother wanted to fight me so I got scared and I “ran from home” when I was like 6 years old… and at some point, I had the idea of just I want mommy so I took the bus there and I knew which stop to get off, but she wasn’t there at work because she already got notified by grandma so she went to file a missing persons report and so I took the bus home… then I got to the mall area near my apartment and saw a bunch of cops…
so when I told my mom about it, my mom was so shocked that I made my way to her workplace…
I doubt the cops even thought of looking that far, they probably just went around the neighborhood.
(literally Home Alone NYC shit, but it was in Guangzhou, China instead)
I just became like my family’s navigator basically.
My mom scolded me for running away, but then also praised me for being smart enough to find my way.
I remember them saying that I used to guided them around places because they stuggled to understand maps or whatever… idk… I don’t really remember about those from this point in time, just the memory of being told I was good at finding my way.
I also was their navigator throught NYC metro system… idk if my parents actually sucked at finding their way… or maybe they were just trying to make me feel confident in myself.
