What buddha taught is that it’s our gift to be able to be present in the moment and observe the sensations that arise from all this suffering without suffering directly.

vs some civilized countries:
they put up these impressive numbers while sucking down most of the budget in every town, while abusing minorities and the homeless and anyone else they can. You ever have to deal with cops for insurance when you get robbed? They are making sure you aren’t scamming the insurance company, who they actually work for. They don’t give a fuck about helping you.
Wonder why those leftists aren’t happy with the state of things 🤔
Wonder why anyone could be pleased with it tbh.

It’s ‘federally chartered’ and nominally a for profit corporation where all the stock is owned by the feds and the feds choose the leadership. It’s supposed to make money not just spend tax money.
sprite0@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your harmless/low-stakes conspiracy theory?3·6 days agoI have enjoyed the sleeper cars! I’m a fan of rail travel which is how i know that the user experience hasn’t changed in 30+ years!
My favorite is the observation cars on the coast starlight.
The trains are still infrequent, often not to schedule and with minimum available routes. Short hops are far too expensive for the experience you get as well. The only thing keeping Amtrak from working seems to be Amtrak.

This is going to cut my cost per gallon by a decent chunk that Côte des Blancs champagne yeast is not cheap but i’m also lazy so bought more instead of washing. Being able to stretch it even a few batches is cool. I checked it again just now and it’s going strong, too!
sprite0@sh.itjust.worksto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Ancient food are absurdly complicated.2·6 days agoit’s looking good! I poured my juice and some invert cane sugar right into the lees in the primary and about 12 hours on i can see bubbles so it looks like it started! Pretty cool if it takes this will be the first alcohol I have made without directly tearing a yeast packet.
i wonder how many times i can do this before the primary needs to be sanitized.
sprite0@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your harmless/low-stakes conspiracy theory?39·6 days agoOkay I think Amtrak is not really remotely interested in providing a positive passenger rail experience, but is instead used by the automotive and railroad industry to provide a poor experience, ensuring that people keep buying cars and gas and keep the rail lines free for commercial usage.
Here is my primary piece of evidence; in e-commerce web design to increase sales your goal is to remove barriers between a motivated customer and them clicking buy. A company the size of amtrak should have a decently sophisticated process of multi variable testing and focus groups to at least someehat improve the process over time and make it easy for people to plan route trips and buy tickets.
And yet in the decades that Amtrak has been operating they user experience has barely changed and seems to do just the minimum to keep up with the times and not look stale. And it’s not an overly complicated item they are selling. A very small in house team would be able to make a very usable experience in just a couple of years. But it’s absolute shit. It’s so frustrating and to try and plan a train trip and it always has been, for absolutely no reason.
Either this massive company has had absolute fools in charge of their web dev for decades leaving piles of money on the table due to incompetence… OR they actually just don’t care about making sales for whatever reason. I think that reason is that they exist just to keep the rail experience shitty.
My secondary piece of evidence is how poor and shitty the actual train service remains after so long in business. Train travel has not gotten better at all in my lifetime, only worse.
sprite0@sh.itjust.worksto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Ancient food are absurdly complicated.2·7 days agoI have to rack a bunch of hooch tonight and start a new batch and i’m going to try this thanks for the advice. i have looked into washing the yeast but it never occurred to me to just toss the few extra cups i get after racking into the next batch.
i switched to raw sugar and made invert sugar with that and it’s the most active batch of yeast i have seen yet so i think it should work well!
