God, now this makes it a difficult one.

On one hand a Trump presidency is awful, on the other hand seeing Elon Musk have a mental breakdown as he can no longer sell Teslas in America is almost worth while

That’s some pretty good bait. I would have left out the part about paying their fair share for fuel and gas infrastructure because that’s a giveaway.

The alternative to this style would be to come at it sideways as “let the free market decide, and it’ll die out because…” then list off some talking points about how much fun it is to roll coal on anyone on a bicycle.

For anyone actually believing this, in Alberta the gas taxes go to the general fund. Vehicle registration, provincial income, and federal income taxes are where the vast majority of public infrastructure money comes from.

Plus notice how this particular troll was unsubtle about moving the goalposts from fuel infrastructure to road infrastructure.

In addition, now they’re talking about taxing them instead of outright banning them and using the weasel word “unless” while being incorrect instead of being authoritative and incorrect.

Come on, this was worse than before. 2/10. Get your shit together if you’re going to troll.

I mean to be fair, the Chinese EVs are largely fake…

But, EVs in general are still the way of the future.

Well Elon and Trump supposedly talk several times a month, so it’s probably Elon telling Trump to block non American EV sales here. But there’s really no telling what they’re talking about.

This will eat 80% of Tesla profits, so he will probably ask Tesla to hurry up with the $56 billion he think he is owed.
Tesla stock would plummet even faster than they have recently.

Trump just confused things (Hailey, Pelosi, Biden, Obama etc). What he means is that he will ban European cars built in Mexico, but allow Tesla produced in China.

I’m half serious, because that’s much more consistent with his policies in 2017-2020

    Ok. Why?

What’s this stupid crusade against electric vehicles really about?

Don’t like them, don’t buy them, free market, right?

I get that little D. Trump wants donations from the fossil fuel industry and ice car manufacturers for his campaign, but why is it that all the stubborn conservatives are all over Facebook hell-bent on shitting on every post about EVs when nobody is forcing them to drive them? What’s so scary about it? Progression? It’s going to happen and they’re going to like it.

The funny thing is that when they eventually need to buy a car, they’ll buy an EV anyway, because that makes sense when they sober up and look at what is best for themselves financially. It’s soo fucking stupid…

I have this aquintance who is into politics on the right wing who’s posting this shit all the time. However, both he and his wife drive electric cars. It’s like they just want to be hypocritical stooges hoping to outsmart everyone else, just using any excuse to shit all over the place thinking their friends will admire them or think it’s funny or something. But it’s actually sad. Who hurt them?

100% tariff on cars imported from China makes them unsellable. However there’s a free trade agreement with Mexico so GM and Ford can use the cheap labor.

Many people have pointed that out as a loophole and BYD has announced a factory on Mexico. If we wanted to block importing Chinese cars from Mexico, while still allowing GMs and Fords, we’d have to take additional action. This just means both candidates have vowed they would

Which is funny since Biden has the exact same position, which is why he expanded on Trump’s trade war with China by upping tariffs on EVs to 100%. I highly doubt Biden would let China do the Mexico workaround either, if he can help it.

            What’s with that?

I recently read an article that he is allowing to install China’s face tracking cameras in Hungary. I first thought that he was installing it for his own benefit and just got the technology from China, but this actually will be used by China.

While I might grasp his unexplained love for putin, this looks like just selling your country to foreign autocracies.

Well, a lot of boomers think office work isn’t real work, a deadweight on the economy, and will turn kids gay thus not making (great-)grandchildren due to not getting dirty and having an air conditioner. The previous system somehow reproduced the toxic Calvinist work morals of capitalist countries, and not only the politically illiterate calls this kind of behavior “communism”, but there’s a very big number of the pensioners, whose votes can be bought by promising more underpaid manual labor to their (grand)children.

The camera thing might be him getting more and more afraid. He’s losing popularity, and even if he crushes popular movements (often by “doomerism”), there are more and more popping up. If the AI bubble burst (which will cause a financial recession) or some of his allies will fall, he can also fall too. He’s a paranoid maniac that goes everywhere in a bullet vest. He just loves his fellow autocrats, especially as he can work together with them.

Not sure what I would have done in Biden’s spot. China has a long history of ignoring patents, doing industrial espionage, and government funding an industry to corner the market on it, shutting everyone else out. We need cheap EVs, but that cost is so high.

Far from my area of expertise, but my guess is because people can swallow lack of forward progress way better than they swallow going backwards. The current trade with China started back under Nixon, and Americans have gotten used to so many ultra cheap Chinese goods. I try to avoid products from China, and for some things it’s really hard, and it usually means paying double the price. If we cut off that trade or raised the tarrifs a lot, the price of so many things works skyrocket and people wouldn’t stand for it.

That’s probably all you needed to write. Keeping prices artificially low by importing so much from China is a failing of the US.
