I found that tailscale (to tunnel traffic to remote devices) with even sunshine (yes, the remote gaming application, just pick the default “desktop” option to stream the desktop) works very well.

And tailscale has an option to transfer files I think.

Ideally you’d probably selfhost tailscale (with headscale) or netbird with a vps+domain, but too much of a hassle for such case.

So my opinion is, if you have a proper vpn that follows the zero-trust model, it should probably protect you. The main new thing here is that it has become illegal to consume pirated media (instead of only sharing them).
