  • Had Hitler and Mussolini not gone to war with basically most of the World, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if their regimes hadn’t lasted until well after both died

This is all what if stuff, but it’s worth noting that Hitler basically financed Germany’s reconstruction (and more importantly Germany’s rearmament) by borrowing heavily, notably from Jewish financiers and from the Soviet Union (a nearly unknown aspect of the non-aggression treaties between Germany and the USSR was an enormous loan). Had Hitler not opted for war and genocide like he did, he would have faced other major problems such as the collapse of his entire economy (The Wages of Destruction is an excellent read on this subject).

Another fun fact about the non-aggression treaties was that ironically enough they included military technology transfers from Germany to the Soviets. For the most part, none of the stuff Germany handed over to Russia resulted in anything significant - with a noteworthy exception being some advanced 37mm antiaircraft turrets that had been earmarked for installation on the Bismarck, the battleship that was rather famously crippled by fucking biplanes.

In my first professional programming job writing custom software for clients in 1995, one of our standard sales pitches to clients was the idea that a GUI-based application would do away with the need for command prompts. This was always met with applause and great rejoicing. It’s kind of remarkable that command prompts are still going strong thirty years later. I’m sure nobody would appreciate having this phenomenon compared to the Amish so I won’t do it. But I think it’s pretty cool that the Amish are still around doing their thing.

  • Fun facts: “killer bees” are also known as “africanized bees”. In the 1970s there was great alarm in the US about the spread of africanized bee strains because they’re so much more aggressive than European bees. There was even a terrible horror movie about it, but this particular catastrophe never materialized. I had a friend in graduate school in the '90s who was part of a team of scientists investigating the problem. It turns out that if you raise an africanized queen in a temperate climate, the bees she produces are no more aggressive than European bees; likewise, a European queen raised in a hot, tropical climate produces bees just as hyper-aggressive as typical africanized bees. So the entire thing was just bee racism all along. Bracism?

Of course global heating is going to make this a bigger problem everywhere, but fortunately we’ll be fucked a lot worse by all the other problems this is going to produce.

  • I was reading a (non-fiction) book about Gallipoli, a battle that was fought in Turkey in 1915-16 during WWI. At one point, an Australian journalist by the name of “Keith Murdoch” shows up and starts contributing to the Allies’ failures and eventual withdrawal. And I was like “wait, is that?” and the answer was “yep”. Keith Murdoch was born in 1885 and was Rupert Murdoch’s (full name Keith Rupert Murdoch) father. Aside from helping to fuck up Gallipoli, Papa Murdoch led a smear campaign against Australia’s greatest WWI general (who just happened to be Jewish) and got him removed from command. The Murdoch name has been a stain on humanity for a long time.
