  • The Matsuri-Eri conclusion was expected. The musical was not. Made me think about that episode of Sayonara Zetsubou where they did one as well.

It’s hard to rank shows. I rate shows just by vibes and nothing objective. Thus comparing anime that I have seen with a long time apart is hard because I can’t really compare the feeling. Is this as good as Nichijou? The art and animation is. CITY certainly didn’t make the impact Nichijou made on me. But back when I watched Nichijou I was a different man. One that was in the awakening of his appreciation for slice of life. CITY certainly is an welcome addition in this decade of SOL.

I do not have much criticism, but I do have a little. The sad/emotional parts didn’t quite hit for me. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t hit super hard. Before watching CITY the animation I watched ARIA the animation. That might have something to do with.

    I really liked that part.

Come to !nichijou@lemmy.world for some after care (both Nichijou and CITY).

Recently there was also some critique of Bleach on here. I used to watch things like Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, etc when I was young. I do really think you need to be quite young and naive and excited by dumb action in order to enjoy this type of anime (as I was back when I watched those). They are also very long, so for an adult with not that much time you would be much better off watching a bunch of shorter anime than to commit to such big one. In my experience all those types of long running shounen have bad writing, massive plot holes, terrible romance, dragging out the plot, power creep, etc. Those shows are definitely overrated in my opinion.

  • Nichijou, City, Lucky Star, Hidamari Sketch, Zetsubou sensei.

Nichijou and City have this very special thing where the foreground (mostly characters) and the background have this seamless harmony. Usually the characters are in a completely different art style and colour palette than the background.

Lucky Star’s backgrounds are in that delicious water colour style. Hidamari and Zetsubou each have an iconic flat style that just has so much soul to it.

All my picks have an unrealistic style and most of them are very chibi. Much more can be said about their style but I’ll keep it short, you’ll just have to watch them :)

  • I really like this episode. Wako is always a treasure. Had a feeling the jokes of the shougi match went over my head. Of course the Mambo no. 5 section was funny. Mio drew really gay stuff again (one of the dudes from her manga is voiced by the seiyuu of Takasugi from Gintama?).

But my favorite part is the tennenkinenbutsu part. Which really made me think of Pani Poni Dash! when they also called the great salamander “tennenkinenbutsu”. I also thought they were drawn in very funny and charming way. Gakusha is my favorite one, the salamander was also one of my favorites in pani poni.

  • I don’t know specifically about animation humor but some general language based things will not easily translate from English to Japanese.

    • As far as I can tell, Japanese people swear a lot less and their assortment of swearing is quite limited compared to English. I think creative swearing, which is quite common in media, is very hard to translate to Japanese.
    • Japanese poetry is very different and it doesn’t really rhyme in the way we are used to. Translating something that rhymes into Japanese is probably a challenge.

I’m not fluent at all so don’t take my word for it.
