I’m not sure if it’s a big reason, but one thing I noticed when living in the UK is that it seemed to be much easier for local landowners to block things from being built compared to other countries I’ve lived in.
I feel like the Thames path through London was kind of representative of that. I feel like anywhere else it would be a normal walking path along the river, but instead it has big gaps, sections that are private, or even some which are closed certain days.
Just the fact that they wanted to make HS2 go UNDERGROUND through large parts of the countryside was a wild idea.
I’m genuinely confused how you think that these two examples of internal uprisings are at all connected to someone saying effectively “don’t count on international law to mean anything since there isn’t any body to enforce it”

Still no workaround?8·5 months agoIn general, US-based sites/companies are usually terrible with supporting multi-lingualism. It’s not really surprising I guess considering how monolingual most of the country/region is.
For years google maps has annoyed me, since I just wanted a good way to have German and English reviews not be translated, since both are common in my city and I speak both languages.
Somehow it randomly works sometimes and then suddenly will start translating them again. It’s very inconsistent.

Everyone is super upset about the current state of things, angry at Trump etc.
However, they are also generally just convinced they need to wait out these four years and then everything can return to normal.
ECB@feddit.orgto News@lemmy.world•Donald Trump says 'nasty' Canada 'meant to be 51st state'41·5 months agoI think he’s just obsessed with controlling the arctic, since it’s going to be ice-free soon (and thus incredibly important for global shipping)
It’s why his 3 main “targets” are Canada, Greenland, and Panama (for the canal)
It’s literally not any different. Starlink is just a less-reliable broadband internet connection, it has nothing to do with WiFi
I can see what you’re saying, but at this point Elon is the most powerful person in the US, and certainly more powerful than any politician (even Trump).
I don’t think everyone realizes how unbelievably, dangerously rich Elon is. The dude is a moron, but he has enough money to buy out all of our politicians many many times over.
ECB@feddit.orgto Technology@lemmy.world•Exclusive: Microsoft is finally shutting down Skype in MayEnglish2·5 months agoI only have to use this occasionally, but on my android I use the app “Talkatone” to make free calls to phones. They have paid plans to keep your number, but I tend to just use new ones whenever one expires.
It might not suit your needs, but it’s worked pretty reliably for me for the past 10 years or so.

I know a bunch of people over here in europe who have them after working a few months/ years in the US.
ECB@feddit.orgto Technology@lemmy.world•Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras?English101·6 months agoIt depends how you forward images. I assume they are referring to how many/most services (like whatsapp/discord/telegram etc) don’t just send the original file, but do some compression to save data. Do this a bunch of times and you end up with a photo that starts to show noticeable artifacts/pixellation.
That’s my take at least

The Republicans are much better about using topics they don’t care as much about to generate support so they can achieve the ones they do.
The Democrats tend to want to die on every hill, which is ultimately a losing strategy.
ECB@feddit.orgto News@lemmy.world•Trump’s immigration plans are already wrecking the food industry0·6 months agoI think this is more agreeing than contradictory. If more immigration is desirable, then expand legal immigration.
As you say, a system built around exploiting illegal workers is bad for everyone.
I lived a few years in the UK and the plugs really annoyed me compared to F.
They were really bulky but also uni-directional. So there was a lot less flexibility in tight spaces (which with the size of London flats…there were a lot of!)
