  • It is almost tedious to have to say this every single time a political discussion comes up: Don’t make a perfect plan the enemy of a good plan. Inevitably the first response to an otherwise reasonable suggestion that statistically would address the significant drivers of a general problem (even if perhaps not this exact problem in this specific context) is to assert that it won’t work all the time or perfectly fix the problem in one shot and so it is not worth considering. Whether intentional or not, it is intellectually dishonest.

And yes I think there could very well be flags that could have delayed access to firearms in this case. But the point isn’t to solve the whole problem in every circumstance, the point is to change the gun culture in the US. Americans may think this kid was raised in a normal household in a normal culture, but this is not true. There are deep cultural problems. And starting with the most milquetoast responsible gun control that aims to reduce the number of Americans that use ownership to drive their identity is a reasonable place to start.

But if I’m being frank, I don’t really care about either Charlie Kirk or the kid who ostensibly shot him. I’m not American and thank fuck for that.

  • Everything Charlie said in his life made it clear that he would have admonished us for caring about his death, and he would have defended the necessity of it. This is his legacy.

If you spend your life saying hateful and morally reprehensible shit you don’t get to enjoy a posthumous rewrite that is entirely at odds with your life’s work.

It’s unfortunate that someone died and it is a disaster for the division and incipient collapse of US society. This doesn’t mean Charlie was a good person, or that he will be missed, or that we should care about his particular death versus many others.

  • Hey, be respectful. This man really put his neck out for his beliefs. He offered himself as tribute to the 2nd amendment, and we should admire his conviction. The proper way to celebrate would be to honour his wishes and show zero empathy. It’s the least we can do for him.

It’s a rare man that has the courage to rationalize senseless violence in defense of unrestricted access to deadly weapons, and it is even rarer to literally make that the hill you die on. He showed us all by example how you truly live your creed.

  • If you’re serious, start looking for companies hiring up here. As I understand it’s not easy, even for economic class immigrants, but I work in tech and I work with many immigrants (albeit not usually from the US, but it’s a different world now). Mind you - please look carefully into the financial impacts as it is a change from the US. Salaries are lower and taxes generally higher, which may or may not be offset in your context in other ways (healthcare a big one, income tax deductions, etc.) But many people, myself included, prefer Canada regardless of the reduced compensation. It’s not always about money.

  • Yeah but you need to have some sort of industrial policy in place as well - to build infrastructure and subsidize onshoring. He’s doing the opposite. He even cancelled the CHIPS Act, which was aimed at onshoring semiconductor production. No company is going to open manufacturing facilities in the US under this enormous economic volatility and without any government help to get started.

He’s an abject fucking moron who, I’m convinced, is trying to reset wages and create a class of low paid wage slaves while funeling huge amounts of money to the wealthy. He’s certainly going to cause stagflation and astronomical wealth inequality. If he succeeds fucking with interest rates he may cause hyperinflation. If the US loses global reserve currency status, they are proper fucked.

At this point, it can only end one way. Even if he’s out of the picture, the damage he’s done will last for a generation at least. He may have already torpedoed US economic superpower status.

  • I think there are two things he wants here…and by “things he wants” I mean things that will make him and/or his wealthy oligarch buddies rich and grow their power.

The first and more near-term goal is the upcoming tax cuts for the rich, which will be trillions of dollars. To fund this, he sees at least three vehicles, that he has been pushing despite the failings of all three: (1) savings from DOGE, (2) the new gold visas, and (3) tariff income. All of these ideas are absolutely dogshit for creating income, but he seems to think they will. In his previous time in office, he even tried to use tariffs in this way. He sees tariffs as income and he’s made it clear. He knows the tax cuts will be hugely unpopular so he has to build up a story as to how they can be afforded. In the meantime if a bunch of rich short sellers make money off of market manipulation, so much the better.

The second goal, and probably more in line with the objectives of the oligarchy in the US as a whole, is to make Canada even more subservient economically to the US. They want a quiet corporate takeover of Canada. They want to depress the value then but it all up, after which we’re even more fucked than we are now. We need to cut this option off and just accept that we need to nationalize these industries, and restrict or even exclude American investment. I think the Canadian government should own at least 51% of key strategic resources, such as telecom, oil, hydro, potash, and media.

In summary, the Americans are now our enemies and should be considered as such. They want to damage our country and assume control of it. They are outright saying this. We need to stop being so fucking naive, and take solid action to prevent it.

  • Let the southern bastards freeze in the dark…not permanently, just a brief period, followed by an export tax. Cut power once in March, then again throughout the NBA playoffs in April.

At this point we should do this whether or not Trump reverses course. Make it clear there is nothing he can do to avoid it.

I’m sick of this market fuckery back and forth. I’m convinced he’s trying to depress the Canadian dollar and the value of Canadian companies and industries, so that oligarchs in the US can buy them up. It’s a hostile corporate takeover of our country. Fuck him, we need to go hard - permanent tariffs as long as Trump is in office…and we need legislation to ensure 51% Canadian ownership of strategic resources, as well as no American investment right now. If necessary, we need to nationalize strategic resources and industries.

What we don’t need is a fucking tax break for the rich. We’re on a war footing right now and our leaders need to accept this. The people have largely accepted it.
