That’s how it was at the university level for me in the US.

In high school though, yeah even 20+ years ago it was getting permission to leave or having justification to be wandering the halls during classes (which I often did, haha).

It didn’t seem overbearing at the time because we would move between classrooms every 45 minutes anyway, and it was like the school was responsible for you like a parent would be.

In hindsight, yeah the authoritarian structure of the public schools looks bad, especially since the country has slid to the right and school security designed around mass shootings is the norm.

  • Yeah. I can’t stay away completely, but it is unquestionable how much better I am in general when I spend more free time outside versus in front of a screen.

Edit: I don’t mean to make screens sound like the bad guy. It’s more about engaging all of your senses and interacting with 100% of your immediate environment, rather than keeping your vision and mind focused on the 24/7 fire hose of only the 0.001% most potent triple-distilled negativity sourced from the entire fucking planet.

The internet is like having omnipotence but only for the knowledge that messes with our brains. We don’t get to see all the nice shit from across the planet 50x a day.

  • The whole domain of foster care, CPS/CYF offices, and adoptions is a huge and tragic world that exists all around us but is invisible to most people.

Almost anybody who works in that world is in the same situation as jobs like teachers and game developers where passionate people are aggressively exploited by the business drones. But they have to deal with sadder higher stakes while getting even worse pay and nowhere near the resources they need. So then they become victims of the system too.

And we all know that here in the US at least, our population does not give a fuuuuuuck about living children breathing air outside wombs. And when they are poor and “urban?” Forget about it.

I can hear conservative distant relatives now: “Sounds like his baby mama should have taken better care of him!” (Of course with the term “baby mama” shoehorned in where it doesn’t fit in order to make sure the sentence ends with an air of racism and dehumanization of an innocent child)
