  • Society can not exist in the way that we evolved.

We don’t get a choice about it. We have to have a society and we cannot live in any other way than we’ve evolved, so our societies are going to be a reflection of our natures. We can build it blindly and just let whatever happen, or we can make informed decisions about the kind of future we want to have.

But we’re intelligent and can mitigate the harmful parts our biological drives with cognition and we do this all day every day, but we still have biological imperatives that we can’t escape from.

You can choose to not consume cake because you know you’re not calorie-starved even though nature rewards you for it. You cannot however have good mental health while in isolation. Understanding what parts of our nature are flexible or what parts need to be managed around is the fundamental thing I’m talking about here. Just like you will be healthier if you eat more vegetables like we were adapted for, your society will be healthier if it values community like we’ve been adapted for.

    Again. Rose colored glasses.

You keep using this word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • Kimmel has already said this is his last season, voluntarily.

Remember that when Conan was forced out, he had specific gag orders about what he could say or not, so take the “voluntary” part with a few grains of salt until that potential gag order expires, if it ever does.

Really what’s happening is fascist censorship of opposition voices and satire is a powerful tool in speaking truth to power, making comedians highly threatening to fascists. Corporations like Skydance don’t care about civilization or a better world, they need line to go up, and the fastest, most efficient way to get that line up is to buy some fascists to run the country you’re located in.

  • Late show was also just nominated for an Emmy.

Kimmel and John Stewart are in fact being targeted next.

I predicted that this would happen if the country started an irreversible slide into fascist warlord dictatorship, I just thought it would be much further down the road.

Watch, in about a year all of these comedians and liberal pundits are going to be replaced by right-wing grifters and podcasters capturing the stupid, populist attention spans of people who just want to stare at flashing lights and listen to people screaming about how evil trans children are interrupted by ads for essential oils and testosterone supplements. This isn’t an exaggeration, this is what we can expect.

  • Keep in mind I’ve only visited China and have limited actual knowledge of culture and policy, but I know there’s been a large wave of Chinese investment in future education, infrastructure and entire cities being made with the express purpose of housing an anticipated population influx, particularly repatriation from other countries like the US. They offer tax-breaks and assistance for housing and other services, but these are specifically to returning Chinese, and I am not researched into what qualifies you for these benefits. I’m sure there are loads of info out there.

Cities like Ordos have been ridiculed and made fun of for being “abandoned” but people forget that China’s policy-thinking stretches out over much larger timespans than most other developed nations. These are gleaming cities with automated taxies, ultra-efficient infrastructure and urban planning and they are starting to fill up. What’s wild is how many of the citizens in these new cities are obviously educated in America and everyone speaks English fairly well. They are also building and incentivizing higher education and tech-sector communities, making their own Silicon Valleys in multiple areas of China.

I think the last pieces they are missing to truly set the groundwork for the Chinese Century are much more robust family-planning and subsiding childcare so they don’t suffer the same population-rot impacting every other capitalism-ravaged nation right now, and better immigration/integration policies. If they can start embracing multi-culturalism they will literally steal the torch from America, but I guess some old ways die hard.

One of the best things going for them, and I have no idea how much they lean into it in reality, is the fact that despite being a capitalist country, they aren’t terrified of the word “socialism” so they won’t face riots from suggesting that maybe it’s okay for one person’s taxes to pay for someone else’s healthcare. Sense of community responsibility that works both ways is something absolutely squeezed out of American culture without a drop remaining.

  • makes being alive American worthwhile

    FTFY.

We deliberately don’t get news about it, but China is making entire cities for the well-educated looking to return to China from the US. They are “taking the solar system” right now according to some experts, and are on their third space station among multiple lunar missions. ESA and other countries have also taken grand steps into space. International science and medical research forges ahead without us. There are countries effectively expanding their social safety nets and other than US involvement in Israel/the Middle East broadly, the world is at an all-time peak of peace and personal safety.

You are being fed a cultivated image. This entire “free speech” catchphrase that we’ve been taught to scream at any offence is an illusion, a lie reinforced by every branch of media, which are in turn branches of the corporations that have long since nailed the coffin closed on actual democracy.

Remember Dead Internet Theory? Dead America Theory. We died around Reagan, the country has been running on momentum and money. We won’t feel it until the money runs out and that’s why this current administration is a pile of bottom-feeding bilge rats scraping off whatever they can from taxpayers. They know the value of the American dollar is about to start plummeting, and climate change and other technological changes to the global stage will be the final flush of this toilet we’ve been trying to pretend we’re not spinning around.

Our progress and species will go on, just not without America leading the way. Even if we got a “perfect” president and administration tomorrow they wouldn’t be able to undo this reverse-snowball that’s currently evaporating out of control.

  • Fuck this judge and this president in every possible way with a dog-piss-rusted fire hydrant.

I’ve already been ruined by medical debt, I’ve started over twice in life, I am now well past middle age and BARELY getting back on my feet and getting my credit repaired. I have family members looking over their shoulders for ICE agents and I may lose what shitty medical coverage we already have because dumbfucks who get their news from AM radio and Facebook don’t get that Medicare and Medicaid have different names in different states and that they’re going to lose coverage just because they’re scared someone with brown skin might get benefits.

I kind of want to see the country burn, ngl.

What happens when a whole population realizes they are rapidly losing anything they might have had to lose?

  • Massive waves of unemployment as AI takes most office jobs, and continues to develop to take many service industry jobs.

It won’t make anything better, we will just have a greater stratification of society, more poor people and the smaller number of rich people get much, much richer.

These rich people will divide the world into power-blocs and the beginnings of techno-feudalism will really show as different oligarchs and corporations become more outspoken in their political and social goals.

Society broadly will be even more distracted and less involved in a system that will be far too chaotic and full of misinformation and fakery that no human will be able to sort through anymore. We will escape into more wonderous virtual lives and feel more depressed as a result. Suicide will skyrocket as depression, homelessness, health problems and extreme weather events make everyone’s lives more miserable. We will start to see the impact of our falling birthrates which will start crashing even faster in the next couple decades. Governments are going to incentivize raising families with short-term subsidies but it won’t be nearly enough for most people who still see no hope for the future and have no social skills anymore.

In under ten years we will be having our first major “problems” with widespread AI control of systems and governing functions. They will be trained and made by above-mentioned oligarchs who have their own agendas, and will behave unpredictably as a result. People will be misled and influenced to be loyalists to varying positions and narratives with SHOCKING ease as these AI systems figure out ways to utterly hack human motivations.

It’s not looking good. This is the optimistic path.

  • We all hem and haw endlessly about how bad the climate change problem is, but by not collectively DOING something about it, we’re leaving it up the countries that actually have the biggest populations and have the most at stake in taking drastic action.

In America or Europe we are talking about building sea-walls and flood control systems, spending billions or trillions on preparing for rising sea levels.

What about India? China? Southeast Asia? They have far more to lose from extreme weather and wet-bulb heat events and far more people with lives at risk and less resources to put into massive concrete walls around their coastal cities. How are we going to feel when they start seeing extreme, unilateral options as viable? If they decide to do drastic geoengineering projects like shading the earth with aerosols or orbital shields, we could all suffer if those projects have unintended consequences. (The climate is complicated, yo.)
