What do law did you think they use to go after people who they monitor on torrent swams? Its the dmca (or equivalent), they notify ISP and isp is obligated to either adress the user a warning or suspension. If the isp ignores and lets users keep going then its the billion dollar ISP not the user that would get sued
Look up the end result of Sony BMG v. Tenenbaum, sony didnt get a dime and was able to successfully discharge the debt through bankruptcy after exhausting all appeal options and costing SonyBMG a ton of money. Thats why you dont hear about lawsuits like that anymore.
They could easily get moles into every single private trackers
Maybe if they actually wanted to, but what actually happens is they hire a much smaller company that monitors public trackers and sends them thousands of “successful” takedowns. When have you seen private trackers taking down torrents due to DMCA? It pretty much never happens, even for public ones these days the best case for these companies is to get google or other search engines to remove torrent sites from results.
You are giving these corps WAAAY too much credit, they only target the lowest of low hanging fruit (ISPs and search engines) because anything else is a waste of time and money. There’s a reason you don’t hear about many lawsuits against private individuals anymore, its because they know its a bad idea to go after “Joe Schmo NoBody” with a net worth of $217 in the bank, who will just declare bankruptcy after the corp spends tens or hundreds of thousands of $ on lawyers for a single case.
Torrents work fine on mullvad

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Privacy-Focused Proton Mail Aids FBI in Uncovering ‘Stop Cop City’ Protester’s True Identity
543·3 days agoIm not a fan of proton, but this trend of blaming corps for individuals poor opsec (paying with a method linked to their real identity) is pretty lame.
Do people using these services actually expect a corporation to break laws or violate court orders on behalf of their users?
Proton regularly releases very clear info about how often they comply with legal orders, this isnt a secret and its certainly not protons fault that activists had poor opsec.

Used phones exist and if you buy ANY android phone google has been paid at some point for licensing not to mention whatever junk the carrier puts on them to subsidize costs.

News@lemmy.world•Motorola announced partnership with GrapheneOS foundation
71·10 days agoOnly phones with hardware-backed verified boot + bootloader relock using alternative keys (currently only Pixels) can support GrapheneOS correctly (according to the GOS team)
So the only thing this can mean is that moto plans to release new hardware with this capability, because none (other then pixels) currently exists.
Dont expect this to mean GOS is coming to older devices. Its unlikely moto will even sell them preloaded because GOS is not exactly the most consumer friendly android fork.
What is a dummy account in this context?
I have about a dozen accounts i rotate between using when i hit usage limits on cursor and other ai junk. I did pay for them but they cost like $2 each

1·24 days agosonarr and radarr only have support for a single account wich among other things exposes api keys.
Seerr lets you have users with the same login as they use for jellyfin (or plex?) To request content and the server admin can approve or deny rhe request.

8·24 days ago20mbps is enough for most things. It mostly limits how many peoppe you could share content to at once, but even then if you had say 4 people you wanted to stream a movie to jellyfin has options so you can limit each stream to 2mbps or whatever ends up working best.

Its possible to have seerr search integrated into the main jellyfin search.
Streaming torrents popcorn or stremio style is not very practical and never has been. Popcorntime still has working forks and stremio works with jellyfin to some degree but unless you also use a paid debrid service or maybe if you dont care about tanking your ratio on a private tracker There are jusy way better solutions: like using either an on demand iptv service inside jfin that costs about the same as debrid anyway but also gets you live tv.
Not to say there isnt tons of room for improvement still, but a lot of progress is being made. I suggest to folx if jellyfin doesnt meet your standards yet, try back in a year and see how much progress gets made.
