Fall season is rapidly approaching! It’s time to start looking ahead to the next season and thinking about what is worth watching vs. what isn’t. This is also the official thread where I will watch for shows that you mention and will enable threads for those shows to be made by our resident bot, @rikka@ani.social.
Please feel free to use this thread as a normal weekly discussion thread as well! Anything that would normally be in the weekly discussion thread any other week is welcome here.
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
Yeah, really looking forward to the next season of Spy x Family, Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi (otherwise known as This Monster Wants to Eat Me), Shuumatsu Touring (otherwise known as Touring After the Apocalypse), Egao no Taenai Shokuba desu (otherwise known as A Mangaka’s Weirdly Wonderful Workplace). I’m gonna watch some older shows this fall too, like I just started Pretty Cure last night, so I’m gonna go through watching all the Pretty Cure series I haven’t seen so far, plus continuing to watch You and Idol Pretty Cure.
Haven’t looked at the fall season yet, but I really enjoyed the summer season. Lots of bangers
For me Summer 2025 is the strongest since Winter 2018 (with #2 best Violet Evergarden, #4 best A Place Further Than The Universe, and Yuru Camp), and the strongest since I started serially watching anime (Winter 2022). It’s got:
Takopi’s Original Sin - my new best anime. I never thought anything could upstage Violet.
My Dress Up Darling S2, The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus - Cloverworks trifecta, all highly-regarded and some of the studio’s best output yet
Dan Da Dan S2
The Summer Hikaru Died
Call of the Night S2
Grand Blue S2
Silent Witch
Yeah, Dress Up My Darling and Silent Witch were two of my favorites.
I didn’t even watch half of the ones you mentioned haha. Of the ones you mentioned, I watched Silent Witch, Dandadan and My Dress-Up Darling.
Takopi scares me. I don’t do well with constantly emotionally heavy anime.
Rascal I wanted to rewatch S1 and the movie first, but haven’t gotten around to it.
Fragrant Flower I want to try, but sticking to the manga for now.
I finally got the courage to finish Madoka Magica (after talking to someone in class about anime, she recommended Madoka Magica, THANK YOU!). I always get stuck at ~episode 4. I can see why this is very popular and sometimes compared to Evangelion. It’s going to be up there in the my “masterpiece” tier of anime.
spoiler
I really like how Madoka is essentially the definition of what a magical girl is, a symbol of hope. The writing is incredible.
I like Mami.
People considered that up there with Evangelion?
People consider Evangelion to be good?
Well, as the resident grandpa here, let me tell you of the good old days: Evangelion was groundbreaking. It shaped the definition of what anime is and can be and its influence can be seen everywhere even today. I know you whippersnappers are easily entertained by flashy light effects and bright colors but there is no question that without NGE the anime industry wouldn’t be half as big and popular as it is today.
Nah, Anno is a hack of an author, and the studio even admitted that most of the Christian imagery included was just put in because it looked cool.
The series lucked out by appealing to the neckbeard stereotype at exactly the right time, and with enough vagueness to let the viewers go full HS english teacher mode and convince themselves that the story was extremely deep and complex when it was really paper thin.
As I’ve already said, unless you’re just looking for a show that tickles the “woah giant robot fight” itch, NGE is just plain bad.
You’re not arguing my point. Whether the writing is good or bad is just an opinion. It doesn’t matter. Some like it, some don’t. My point was that the influence NGE had on the entire industry (and some more industries around it as well) is undisputed and verifiably a fact.
ps.: That “woah giant robot fight” argument doesn’t work in a series that has very little giant robots.
The first TV series anyway.
The movies are just kind of a mess.
Interesting. I’ve only seen the TV series and I thought that was a mess.
The original series is also a giant mess
The only thing I’m really excited about here is Fujimoto Tatsuki 17-26. I’ll probably watch the next season of Spy x Family too though; I liked the previous seasons and my wife is a huge fan.
As someone who made a rockin’ Saitama cosplay back in the day I wish I could say I was hyped about the new season of One-Punch Man but after what happened with Season 2 and what I’ve seen so far of Season 3 I’m starting to think that IP is cursed and all of ONE’s good anime luck went into Mob Psycho 100.
Oh yeah, and Baan was cool. If you haven’t seen Baan, go watch Baan. It’s less than 20 minutes, and it’s free to watch on Youtube. It’s not every day something at this level of quality gets made with the intent to lose money, purely for the art.
Edit: I also finished Summer Time Rendering. It was really good! It’s rare for a shounen anime to stick the landing like that, but the writing stayed strong all the way to the end.
This season is looking very light for me. The only thing I’m absolutely certain I’ll watch is S3 of Spy x Family, I had a good time with the 1st and 2nd and I don’t expect the 3rd to be any different. I’ll give One-Punch Man a shot but as a manga reader my expectations are rock bottom low. Other than that nothing else has caught my eye.
Next Season
Most Excited For
Umamusume: Cinderella Gray part 2 - Part one was amazing. With how much the trailers hyped it up, it seems safe to say part two would be too. Without any strong contenders next season, this would likely be my next anime-of-the-season.
Continuing
These are sequels that I will be continuing but am not so invested in. If I lack the time and these anime are not great (i.e. 8 / 10 or better), I will be dropping them.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill season 2 - It’s sad how low the bar has been set when it comes to isekai that anything that’s not wish fulfillment is automatically decent.
Spy x Family season 3 - The life of the Forgers is always cute and fluffy. It’s wholesome to watch, but it doesn’t get me hooked.
Checking Out
These are new anime that I would giving a shot at.
Digimon Beatbreak - The artstyle reminds me of Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Also, I enjoyed Digimon more than Pokemon in my childhood. It looks like this is the brand’s attempt at refreshing itself and I hope it’s successful.
Gnosia - Interesting premise. Sounds like Among Us.
Notable Absentee
One Punch Man season 3 - Sounds like it would only be decent at best, similar to season 2. Decent is not good enough nowadays when there are so many top anime to check out.
This Season
I picked up The Summer Hikaru Died pretty late into the season, but now it is my favourite.
I find the style of suspense / horror similar to Heavenly Delusion. In terms of plot / characters, it reminded me of Nimona.
It is easily at least a 9 / 10. And as long as it doesn’t mess up the last episode, probably a 10 / 10.
Shuumatsu Touring and Class 3-Z Ginpachi-sensei are the only ones that get my attention in this season. At the surface, it looks like this will be the weakest of 2025. Witch Hat Atelier was supposed to air at around this time, but it’s delayed to 2026.
Gnosia if not for the op and ed alone.
Umm, yeah, as others have said this season does look bare compared to the last 2 seasons that I managed to sit out…
So this forthcoming season, I’m planning to watch:
- Ganglion - About a combat minion in an Evil Organization, because I love this kind of thing
- One Punch Man S3 - Even though I’ve read ahead in the manga and know where it goes
- Sanda - How silly can an action show about the Santa clan get?
- Towa no Yuugure - Mostly because PA Works, but this sounds absolutely fascinating.
Maybe:
- Campfire Cooking S2
- Catch up on what I missed these last 2 seasons
Well, it looks like I can go back to just binging older anime exclusively, because there’s nothing there that caught my attention. I’ll undoibtedly watch Spy X Family some time but it’s a known quantity and I’ve been following the manga since the start, so I’m in no hurry.
Last week, I finished a rewatch of Scrapped Princess and loved it just as much as the first time. It’s just such a great series.
Then I happened on a bit of a surprise - Rokka no Yuusha. It’s a simple and intriguing set-up - when the demons invade the land, the six heroes - the Braves of the Six Flowers - will assemble to fight them. And sure enough, the demons are on rhe move and the heroes assemble - but there are seven of them. So it plays out as an imposter mystery, and is actually quite engaging. The only real problem with it seemed to be that it’s based on the first volume of a six-volume light novel series, so it has a somewhat open ending. But it was okay anyway - the ending was necessarily not entirely satisfying, but it worked. But then, in the last few minutes of the last episode, for who-the-hell-knows-what reason, it goes beyond that somewhat open but still sarisfying ending and tacks on some of the cringiest sequel bait I’ve ever seen anywhere. It was seriously so bad that at first I thought it was some sort of satire It didn’t really affect the series overall, since it was just tacked on to the end but my god it was awful.
And now I’m sort of knocking around, but I think I’m about ready to give Haibane Renmei the attention it deserves.
And now I’m sort of knocking around
Once I finish up what I am watching this season, this will be me. I am thinking that I might dip back into the archives and knock out some stuff that are on the “you should watch this at least once” list that I just haven’t had the motivation for.
new gintama content 🔥 !gintama@lemmy.world
Looks like it will be a pretty light season for me in the fall (giving me a chance to catch up on other stuff). Here is where my mind is at right now:
Definitely watching:
- One Punch Man Season 3 - Let’s see how this turns out…
- Campfire Cooking Season 2 - I love this series, so I am excited for more.
- Star Wars Visions Vol. 3 - Super excited that they returned to Japanese studios for the third season.
- Zombieland Saga Movie - If it ever gets released with subs…
Might Try:
- Touring After the Apocalypse - I am a sucker for post-apocalyptic SOL…so this is right up my alley
- Dusk Beyond the End of the World - An anime original that looks interesting
Other than that, I might just wait and see what the response is like for other shows this season. I do want to shout out !kingdom@ani.social as its 6th season is airing this Fall.
