If your VPN lets you jump between servers in the same region, try it. You might find they can’t ID every IP address out there.

But the best content is the content that you have decided to watch…

I don’t think this has anything to do with YouTube really. They would love to show you all the content all the time. But the strict copyright laws and agreements they’ve made with some parties, such as FOM, requires them to gatekeep some content. YT figured out a long time ago it was better for them to have the content and gatekeep it, than not have the content at all.

It sucks, but the whole world of regioned licensing sucks. But it’s a complicated subject, made more complicated by decades of large companies maximizing their profits and lobbying for complex laws and regulations.

This also clearly isn’t enshittification. It’s kinda sad how that word has just become “I don’t like this”, instead of the narrow definition it originally had.

I dunno, I still think this is on YT. There’s a reason it’s stupid easy to bypass geolocked content on basically any other platform, and it’s because of what you say: the platforms don’t actually care. They BENEFIT from having more content to give you. YouTube is making a distinct effort to go detect geolock bypassing here, where other platforms choose not to.

If I had to guess, it’s really that they want to discourage VPNs entirely, as it fucks with their primary business of data collection.

What are youtubers going to advertise now if not products to circumvent other products restrictions?

I get a “log in to confirm you’re not a bot” on some IP ranges for a while now. It’s fucking annoying because I use private mode exactly because I don’t want those videos polluting my feed with their absolutely moronic algorithms and I’m not going to browse without a VPN anymore.
