Not pictured are a dozen eggs and a 5lb sack of spuds under the cilantro.

I’m to that age where I take great joy in comparative shopping. I’m sure I could have saved a few more bucks if I had shopped around a bit more, but this wasn’t bad.

Total was $66.64.

Some highlights I think are great value

$1.99/lb chicken breast $0.33 per avocado $2.99 per Red Baron pizza $0.79 per can of tuna

Yeah, definitely no ethical consumption under capitalism. At least they’re not price gouging to the extent most of the others are. Being anti-labor is scummy. Their meat is garbo and overpriced though.

Hmmmm…I usually don’t see the workers at my Aldis wear any hats. Maybe 1 hat, and I don’t remember it, because that doesn’t stick out in my mind as out of place.

But certainly nobody wearing 17 hats or anything. I’d take a picture of that, and ask them “Hey man, why are you wearing so many hats???”

It’s an American idiom, probably emerging about 60 years ago but n-grams dates first usages in print to around 1947.

To wear many hats is to do many different jobs or have many different responsibilities.

Helpful point about meat, any suggestions on places to check for better deals on meat? Increasingly I’m just reducing the amount of it I eat, but being broke as shit I’m always trying to keep in mind where’s a good place to buy what

I suppose that can be geographically dependent. I just so happen to live near a grocer that has a good thing going with local farmers. The meat is from Save A Lot. They typically have great value in meat in my area. Particularly pork and chicken, but often beef too. Save A Lot cuts their own meat and they’re not the best at it, but that savings they do pass on.

I should really look up if there are local grocers around me other than farmers markets. Thanks for your thoughts!

At least they dont donate to political campaigns. Being anti union sucks though, I wasn’t aware of that, and its always good to know those kinds of things, thanks for making me more informed

ALL businesses are anti-union, you can’t hold that against Aldi. At least they are offering some sort of hedge against ridiculously high prices in Publix.

And now they’ve bought Winn-Dixie, and will be converting them to Aldi’s, so their lower prices will spread.

Not union, but they are still better than the rest.

WinCo isn’t anti-union, but WinCo is a worker owned company, they might be a co-op, but I’m not sure.

However, if you have Winn-Dixies still open around you, I’m guessing you’re in Florida or the deep south. You don’t have WinCo out there.

Good haul. I like deals. We reduced our bill by buying the dried beans in bulk and rehydrating overnight and then a simmer.

And I found this brand Jasmine tomato paste that comes in a huge jar, and two spoons of that mixed with a cup or two of water ( and spices) makes a better tasting pasta sauce than any store bought sauce we can buy here. The jar is $6 and I can get 10+ dinners out of it as pasta or ratatouille, or soup base etc

I fume when someone places a frozen pizza in my cart sideways at checkout. Nobody wants sideways pizza, with all the toppings dropping to one side as it slowly thaws. 😫

Most of the time i end up reorganizing the toppings when i take it out anyway since they never seem to be balanced. I may also have minor OCD.

Yeah, this is as cheap as I’ve seen in a long time and is only a weekly special. I do see them regularly at Aldi in the 50 cent range though. Still a steal of a deal and I’ll be back later in the week.

A lot is Aldi and some is Save A Lot. I find Aldi meat to be kinda crap, but our local SAL has decent local meat for a good value along with some produce.

Oats … Thnx, reminds me i need to prepare my overnight oats!

I love oats. Usually I cook them and guess what, cooking oats in oatmilk is awesom. You don’t even need to add sugar anymore

I’m lazy and just microwave them for a few minutes in milk. Quick, easy, cheap, healthy, and filling. Oats are underrated. And it doesn’t take much to make them taste awesome.

1/3 ratio of oats to water with a pinch of salt is my favourite (plus banana on top), and because its water it won’t catch and you can cook them for longer until they go super smooth.

TBH, olive oil is my food lube of choice, but there are quite a few applications where Imperial can get me 80% of the way to butter and it’s only a minor ingredient. No doubt butter is better and I stock that too, but for $1.24 for 4 sticks, you can’t go wrong IMO.

Personally I stir fry a lot so olive oil has too low of a smoke point for me. I have to stick to avocado, peanut, sunflower oil or vegetable oil. I think some olive oils can have higher smoke points but it’s annoying to do trial and error instead of sticking with what works.

Learn to make your own marinade and BBQ sauce. It’s cheaper, and with proper planning (you need to make most sauces at least a day before to get the flavors to really mix,) easier.

Also I find that fresh made sauces, even with dry herbs, taste better than bottled.
